Questions About Titles

I bought a car from a private seller, but there are errors on the title that require the seller’s notarized signature—and I can’t reach them. What should I do?

In these cases, we recommend bringing your documents in for verification. If necessary, we can guide you through the Attempt to Contact process, which helps document your efforts to reach the seller and may provide a path toward resolving the title issue.

The DMV says the title the seller gave me isn’t the most current version. What are my options?

It’s important to stay in contact with the seller when buying a vehicle from a private party. If the current title record is held in another state and the original owner is reachable, they will need to request a duplicate title. We can help you navigate this process based on the state involved.

Can I buy a car using just a bill of sale?

A bill of sale alone does not prove ownership. It simply indicates the seller’s intent to transfer the vehicle to you. To officially take ownership, a properly signed and transferred title is required.

How is sales tax determined in a private sale?

Private party sales between individuals (not involving a dealership or business) are not typically subject to sales tax in Nevada. However, if the seller is a business, such as a mechanic, body shop, rental company, auction house, etc., the sale may be considered a dealer transaction. In that case, taxes are assessed based on the sale amount and the applicable county tax rate.

Questions About Registration

I bought a car from an out-of-state dealership. How do I register it in Nevada?

To register your vehicle in Nevada, you’ll need the following:

  • Dealership Purchase Order
  • Vehicle Title (if applicable)
  • VIN Inspection (done at the DMV; no appointment required)
  • Nevada Auto Insurance
  • Smog check (required if the vehicle is more than three years old)

What is the cost to personalize my license plates? Can I use special symbols? How many characters are allowed?

Personalized plate fees vary by style:

  • Standard Plate: $44
  • Replica Circa: $62
  • Vegas Golden Knights: $81
  • All Other Styles: $96

Can I register my vehicle for more than one year at a time?

No. In Nevada, registrations for motorized vehicles are valid for one year only. Trailers may be registered for either one or three years. Mopeds, once registered, do not have an expiration period as long as ownership does not change.

Can I use the seller’s license plates?

No. In Nevada, license plates are tied to the vehicle owner, not the vehicle itself. When you register a newly purchased vehicle, the DMV will issue you new plates.

Questions About Moving Permits

How many temporary moving permits can I get from the DMV?

As a new vehicle owner, you are eligible for a 30-day temporary moving permit. If the vehicle has mechanical issues preventing registration, additional permits may be issued if you can provide proof of repairs in progress.

I live in an apartment complex and my vehicle got tagged for towing because it has no plates. What can I do?

Apartment complexes may tow unregistered vehicles from their property. To avoid this, you can obtain a temporary moving permit and display it clearly. Alternatively, ask your property manager to provide written permission that can be placed on the vehicle to help prevent towing.

Do I need a temporary permit to drive my vehicle to another state?

Yes. Any vehicle driven on public roads must have a valid registration or a temporary permit. If you're transporting the vehicle out of state, you’ll need a Drive Away permit, which indicates your departure city and destination.
